Jim Mainland was born in Lerwick.  He is a graduate of Aberdeen University and recently retired as Principal Teacher of English, Social Subjects and RME at Brae High School. He has published three poetry collections: A Package of Measures (Pieces of Eight Press, 2002); The League of Notions (Hansel Cooperative Press, 2013); and Fuglicaavie (The Print Floor, 2018). His poems and prose can be found in The New Shetlander, and in other magazines and anthologies locally, nationally and online, including These Islands, We Sing, Writing the North, and Bread and Roses. His poem ‘Miracle’ was chosen as one of the best Scottish poems of 2013. While most of his work is in English, Jim has translated a wide variety of poetry into vivid Shetland dialect. He lives in The People’s Republic of Nibon, in the north of Shetland.
